Thus the legitimacy of the question of sin’s origin is itself a question of very great importance. Is it the case that as soon as we search for the “components” of sin we can only emasculate or amputate the reality of our guilt?9 It is simply impossible, we should judge, to sever this bond between an “explanation” for sin’s origin and an illegitimate excuse.
